Frame craziness and the holiday frenzy

I don't know if it's the economy, or if people are just tired of the same gifts every year, but I've gotten a ton of custom frame orders over the last few days. Honestly, I just think it's the latter. People just love unique and personal gifts, and the fact that my frames are so affordable helps too, i think! One project includes 9 holiday frames as gifts, and another project has me designing 5 frames for grandparents! It's exciting to think that my studio will be a mini-war zone, full of paint, brushes, paper, and of course clippie-making on top of that.

Buying supplies today at my favorite craft store was an adventure, and not a good one. Lines wrapped around the aisles and everyone seem to be in a frenzy getting ready of the holidays. Stores are preparing for Christmas sooner than ever, completely bypassing Thanksgiving, and shoppers are falling for it. I guess Thanksgiving is not as profitable as Christmas. I found myself falling for it too, buying ornaments, mini trees, and gift wrap galore! I'm suddenly TOTALLY in the holiday spirit, can't wait to get started on decorating!

I've been wanting to try my hand at woven, ribbon headbands for a long time and finally decided to take the plunge. I love the finished look this has (and I love the Fall color scheme). I will be offering custom headbands for girls and ladies at our Etsy shop very soon! But you can start to order yours today! That's right, my blog readers, Twitter followers and Facebook fans will be able to order their own color combos before they go on sale next week!

The one shown here is a 1" sturdy plastic headband woven with a 4-color combination: beige, white, coral, and chocolate brown.

I can do 2, 3, and 4 color combinations (any color or pattern) and use either 1/2", 1", or 1 1/2" headband size. Headbands comfortably fit both girls and ladies. They take about a week for production and shipping, so order yours today!

Many of you who read this may not be familiar with some of the more known Etsy.com sellers, we tend to be a close community, and if not close, we have all at least communicated in the etsy forums and chat. One of the first sellers to greet me my first time in the chatrooms of etsy was ChromaSmear. She was a Canadian artist, and digital art extraordinaire, and one of the nicest people on Etsy.

An avid animal lover, and supporter of pet rescues, her memory and legacy will live on for those of us who choose to act. SO, in her honor, I have decided to give 100% of the proceeds from all sales at my shop this week to Paws 4 You Rescue. Two Custom Orders!

As we prepare to release our summer items later this month, I had a chance to create this beautifully simple photo frame for someone who wanted to give a photo of her parents with their long-time friend as a gift. She basically gave me free reign to design something appropriate. I wanted to capture a little of the dominant colors, and keep the frame free of design clutter. This is the final result:

This is a 2" beveled wood frame with a 5x7" opening, ready for hanging.

I also designed a one-of-a-kind wall art piece for a personal friend. She wanted to give her mother a nice plaque with her daughter's hand print for Mother's Day. Although little Chloe was a little fidgety, the end result was as cute as can be, imperfections and all!

This is a 7"x7" beveled wood plaque, hand painted and custom designed, ready for hanging with your choice of ribbon. (Excuse the photo quality. Digital camera was on the fritz so we took the pics using our Google Phone).

No More Entrecarders!

If you do not know what Entrecard is, it is a system of credit that bloggers gain by visiting other blogs with the same widget and "dropping" a virtual business card. In my opinion, a very cool way of seeing blogs you would have never discovered on your own. Then, with credit gained each time you visit another blog, you can "purchase" adspace on a blog you feel is perfect for your niche, thus creating a great way for a targeted audience to see your blog.

Well, that is over...at least for me. I have decided to delete my account for a couple of reasons. Graham, Entrecard's founder, has decided over the course of a few months to move into a paid-ad system...with real money. In a nutshell, he needs to pay the bills. SO he's asking us to use our blog space and approve paid ads (most of the time, very innapropriate ads) that will show 50% of the time. He says you can still use the EC creds, and approving ads is not required. But when you offer ads at such low rates (.02-.03 cents was the introductory, now it has since doubled), most people were just purchasing ads and "cashing out" their EC points to buy money ads...Confused yet? Yeah, thought you would be.

So my argument (and that of many fellow ECers that feel the same way) is why would ANYONE bother in taking the time to drop on other blogs in the traditional way yo gain creds, if we can just go buy an ad with hard currency? Every since this new system started, droppers are at a standstill, and yet I was receiving about 10-20 pending paid ads that I had to individually reject, only because more than half were ridiculous and not relevant to my blog. So I have decided to stay away from a complex system that has no transparency. To all my ECer's, i'm sorry, and I hope you continue to visit my blog. In an effort of good faith towards my loyal EC droppers, I will allow you to send me your button, which I will display free-of-charge, as long as you allow me to display my button on yours :) It's an even, easy exchange!

My first outdoor sale display!

Yesterday, my sis (who owns flans by bea) and I shared a table at an outdoor garage sale for tenants of her condo. The day started slightly cloudy, and for a few moments we thought we might have to hurry all the stuff under a roof. But the clouds cleared, and we remained under a very pleasant shady Saturday afternoon. It was my first try at putting together a display that was attractive to many shoppers. It was a quiet and slow day. I did manage to sell a few sets and even a mini-tote. I did pass out plenty of postcards and business cards. It was good practice for the next time I do a craft fair (If I ever do!)

Custom Bow Order

This weekend, a client asked me for some very specific custom bows for her beautiful daughter who is 5, and has long, flowing dark brown hair. I have made several giant bows for her in the past, and this time, I decided to post a few pics of the results. I will not offer these in my shop just yet, but if you would like any of these designs for yourself, please email (top left-hand column) me or visit my etsy store and send me a convo!

This is a beautiful 4.5" white bow layered with a 4" hot pink bow. The center is an approx. 1.5" Hello Kitty embellishment, and the bow is mounted on a 2.25" french barrette. Bows are hand-sewn.

This is a 5.5" white grosgrain bow layered with 3/8" beige and denim grosgrain ribbon. Bow is Hand-sewn and mounted on a 2.25" french barrette.

This is a 4" loopy, layered bow in shades of purple (pleaqse excuse the quality of the photo, it was taken using a Google Phone and makes the purples look blue). All hand-sewn with suede flower and rhinestone center. Mounted on a 2.5" french barrette.

Children's Product Safety Improvement Act and how it affects you and me

Although I'm all for safety, the wording in this soon-to-be-law will shut down small business that focus on US-made and other non-toxic children's products (not just toys, but ALL children's products, like mine), because ALL retailers, as well as the mftrs. will have to have 3rd-party testing for lead levels....which means that not only will we lose quality products, regardless of where they're made, but resellers like Goodwill and the Salvation Army will also have to do testing, which costs $$$$$. This could very well put a lot of people out of business...and in this economy, many small businesses rely on their small profit to get by. Those who do the testing, will also have to raise prices to compensate. Which means paying more for toys and kids' products, and we all know we barely have enough $$ to buy the toys that are already on the shelves.

Should this law go into affect as is, I will have to cease operations on etsy by February. Although things are looking up. the US Conumer Product Safety Commission is now opening it's doors to comments about the legislation. I'll keep you posted as news becomes available.

A Few Custom Orders in the Mix...

We've been pretty busy lately trying to fulfill custom orders, and feel we're pretty much caught up. I've been working with my client, Georgiana, for a couple of months on the perfect gift for her soon-to-be niece. She wanted something that would really bring her room's decor together. With lots of pinks, red, and even greens, we were able to come to a very successful product.

The central piece in this "triptych" is a 12"x16" personalized canvas painting, matching the bedding selected by the parents:

The two side pieces are 8"x8" canvas paintings based on the wallpaper border selected for Megan's room:

I also finished a custom order for my client, Jenny, who wanted something for her two tweeny- nieces. They thought pink was too girly and babyish for them, so we went with simple, identical , 9"x12" checker-border design with 3D wooden heart embellishments and rhinestones. Here's one of them:

Things have been pretty busy at the Sofia Valeria Collection on Etsy.com. Seems like everyone is looking for unique gifts and accessories for their little girls!

I recently created a custom design for the owner of "RetroCycle", a great little vintage etsy store (RetroCycle.etsy.com). Her stepson was gravely injured as he was hit by a car a few months ago, and after believing his future was dim, he miraculously survived and is now recovering at a New York hospital. Speaking with her, she told me the hospital bills are staggering (already in the millions), and will continue to grow as he's to stay in the hospital for a few months more. She asked me for a name plaque for him. Since he is a college student, I designed something a but more mature for him...I hope he likes it!
